George Takei is a well-loved actor, author, and activist best known for his iconic role as Hikaru Sulu, the helmsman of the starship USS Enterprise in the iconic sci fi Star Trek television series (1966–1969) and the subsequent feature films.
Takei brought a sense of calm competence and quiet dignity to the bridge of the Enterprise, helping to define one of the most enduring franchises in entertainment history. His portrayal of Sulu across the original series, six motion pictures, and animated adaptations cemented his place in popular culture and earned him a devoted global fanbase.
Beyond Star Trek, Takei’s acting career spans more than six decades and includes a wide array of stage, television, and film credits. He appeared in classic shows such as The Twilight Zone, Perry Mason, Hawaii Five-O, MacGyver, and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
On Broadway and in regional theater, he earned acclaim for performances in productions like Pacific Overtures and Allegiance, the latter of which he also co-wrote, drawing from his own family’s experiences during the Japanese American internment of World War II.
His voice credits include Star Trek: The Animated Series, The Simpsons, Futurama, Adventure Time, and numerous video games.
In recent years, Takei has continued to expand his legacy through guest roles on series like The Big Bang Theory, Heroes, and Supah Ninjas.
