He rose to international fame as Arthur "Fonzie" Fonzarelli on the iconic sitcom Happy Days (1974–1984), where his portrayal of the cool, leather-jacketed greaser made him a cultural phenomenon. The role earned him two Golden Globe Awards and three Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. Earlier, he appeared in films like The Lords of Flatbush (1974) and built experience through theater and commercials after earning his MFA from Yale School of Drama.
Post-Happy Days, Winkler transitioned into character acting with notable film roles including Chuck Lumley in Night Shift (1982), Principal Arthur Himbry in Scream (1996), Coach Klein in The Waterboy (1998), and Click (2006), Here Comes the Boom (2012), The French Dispatch (2021), and others.
On television, he delivered memorable performances in series such as Arrested Development (as Barry Zuckerkorn), Parks and Recreation, Children's Hospital, and Royal Pains. He also guest-starred widely and earned an Emmy nomination for The Practice.
In recent years, Winkler achieved renewed critical acclaim as acting teacher Gene Cousineau on the HBO dark comedy Barry (2018–2023), winning the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in 2018, along with a Golden Globe nomination, SAG nomination, and two Critics' Choice Awards.
